Between work, family and other priorities, we are always "on". It's not always easy to slow down but it is probably exactly what our body and mind need to heal, grow and feel okay again.

We don't need to wait until we burn out. We don't need to justify taking a day for ourself. It's okay and actually it's healthy to take a break.

When we rest with intention amazing things happen.

When we rest our nervous system shifts out of stress mode and into healing mode. Resting also supports muscle recovery and hormonal balance, which is important after long workdays. When we take a break our decision making improves and we are more creative.

A couple of weeks ago, I took a mini work/play vacay. I went for a class but I made sure it was located near a beach! When I wasn't in class I met up with freinds, family and ate delicious eats. I came home feeling completely revived. Maybe taking time off from work is difficult for you. If so, combine work and play! Author of Sacred Rest, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, says "Taking time for rest isn't indulgent. It's a biological need". If traveling isn't an option, there are other ways to restore.

  1. Journal for 5 minutes. Writing thoughts down helps reduce anxiety, improves clarity and boosts the immune system!

  2. Take a walk outsdie. A short 10 minute walk lowers stress. Try it!

  3. Drink water! Dehydration can trigger foggy thinking, fatique and irritability.

  4. Breathe!!!

  5. Get a massage!! Massage lowers cortisol and increases serotonin and dopamine. The International Journal of Neuroscience found massage therapy boosts mood-regulationg nurotransmitters.

  6. Hide the phone!! According to the Journal of Behavioral Addictions, people who unplug from their phone regularly report higher levels of satisfaction and focus.

Rest is the foundation that makes productivity sustainable and life more enjoyable.

So, if you are feeling exhausted, depleated, overwhelmed or anxious, take the break.
