You've probably heard about or experienced massage cupping.

Cupping is a healing technique that uses gentle suction to lift the skin and fascia, helping to release tension, increase circulation and reduce pain.

A client recently asked me if I offer it so I signed up for a live, full 2-day training to learn more... I'd already had basic knowledge about cupping from massage school, working at spas and online training but I decided it was time to dive deeper.

I learned so much and am excited to share what I've learned with you!

In traditional Chinese medicine, cupping is believed to move “stuck energy” or Qi, making it a favorite for people who feel blocked, emotionally heavy, or mentally sluggish.

Interesting!! But are there other benefits? Initially, I was skeptical, but there has actually been lots of research on the topic and my clients are loving it so far.

Here are great reasons to add cupping to your massage session:

1. Relieves Muscle Tension and Pain

According to Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (2015), cupping does indeed help to relieve chronic neck and lower back pain. It increases blood flow to tight or sore muscles, which may help reduce stiffness and speed up recovery. Cleveland Clinic also describes cupping as helpful for musculoskeletal pain and muscle recovery. Learn more here: Cleveland Clinic article

2. Boosts Circulation

Cupping helps draw fresh blood into the area being treated, which brings nutrients and oxygen to tissues, supporting healing and reducing inflammation. Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies (2016) noted increased local blood flow and tissue repair after cupping.

3. Encourages Lymphatic Drainage and Detox

Cupping stimulates lymph flow, which helps the body eliminate waste, reduce puffiness, and clear cellular debri, especially beneficial when you’re feeling stagnant or run down. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2020) suggests cupping can support lymphatic flow and improve immune function.

4. Reduces Inflammation

Ironically, by creating temporary, controlled inflammation (those red marks), cupping triggers a healing response that can reduce chronic inflammation over time. Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences (2014) and NIH research note the “counter-irritation” effect that helps regulate immune response.

5. Supports Relaxation and Nervous System Reset

Cupping stimulates parasympathetic activity. The “rest and digest” response helps you get into a deeper state of relaxation, provides greater stress reduction, and may help you sleep better. Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice (2021) discusses cupping’s calming effects on the autonomic nervous system.

I'm off to see clients now but I'll be adding more info on this topic soon...
